Post Weight Loss Surgery

What Is Post-Weight Loss Surgery?
Post-weight loss surgery refers to the surgical procedures performed to remove excess skin and fat following significant weight loss. When the body loses a large amount of weight — typically more than 45 kg — the skin that was to accommodate the excess fat cannot retract to match the body’s new shape. The result is loose, skin affecting the abdomen, flanks, arms, thighs, back and breasts. Diet, and non-surgical treatments cannot remove this excess skin. excision is the only effective treatment.
Post-weight loss surgery is also known as body contouring surgery or excess skin removal surgery. It encompasses a range of procedures different body areas, performed in a staged plan tailored to each patient’s anatomy and priorities.

Who Is Affected by Excess Skin After Weight Loss?
Excess skin develops after any form of weight loss — bariatric surgery (gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, gastric banding), weight loss medication, or sustained diet and exercise. The the weight loss and the older the patient at the time of loss, the more pronounced the skin laxity is likely to be, as skin elasticity reduces with age.
Men and women are both affected, though the pattern of skin laxity differs. Women typically develop more prominent skin changes in the abdomen, breasts and inner thighs. Men tend to develop more significant abdominal and chest changes, with gynaecomastia — enlarged or ptotic chest tissue — a common post-weight-loss concern specific to men.
Excess skin causes functional as well as cosmetic problems: skin rashes and infections in deep skin folds, chafing, restricted mobility, hygiene difficulties and physical from the weight of hanging skin panels. These functional problems, as well as the cosmetic concerns, are addressed by loss surgery.

Staging — Why Procedures Are Performed in Stages
Most patients requiring post-weight loss body need more than one procedure. Performing multiple lengthy skin excision procedures in a single session significantly increases the risk of wound complications, anaesthetic and prolonged time. At Centre for Surgery, procedures are staged across separate sessions — typically with a minimum of six to twelve weeks between stages — to allow full recovery from each before the next.
Staging also produces better results. Each procedure can be optimised independently, and the results of earlier stages can be assessed before planning subsequent work. Patients who require both upper and lower body contouring may have four or more separate sessions over twelve to twenty-four months.
The plan is agreed at consultation. You are not required to commit to all stages at the initial consultation — each stage is consented and quoted separately.

Can I Have Bariatric Surgery and Skin Removal at the Same Time?
No. Post-weight loss surgery must be performed after bariatric surgery, not at the same time. The two types of are performed by different specialists — bariatric surgery by a bariatric surgeon; body contouring by a consultant plastic surgeon. More importantly, excess skin cannot be surgically removed until the excess weight has been lost and weight has been stable.
After bariatric surgery, reaching target weight typically takes twelve to twenty-four months. Weight must then remain stable for at least six months before skin removal surgery is considered. Most post-bariatric patients are therefore not candidates for skin surgery until at least eighteen months after their bariatric procedure.
SAFElipo™ liposuction is frequently combined with skin excision procedures to remove residual fat deposits. Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure and does not substitute for the weight loss achieved by bariatric surgery.
